BIBLE REASONS FOR KEEPING THE SABBATH
OLD TESTAMENT
1)
After working the first six days
of the week in creating this earth, the great God rested on the seventh day.
(Genesis 2:1-3) God does not need to rest since he never wearies or grows
tired; he did it to set up an example for us. We can confidently follow God’s
example for God is good and holy and everything he does is good and holy.
2)
God blessed and sanctified the
seventh day. (Genesis 2:3) The common misconception is that it was made a holy
day thousands of years later at the time of Moses, but that is not so. Since
the beginning of creation it was a blessed and sanctified day, it wasn’t blessed
and sanctified at some later date.
3)
The Lord blessed the Sabbath day,
and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:11) This is a reaffirmation of what God had done
from the very beginning of creation. This was not a new revelation or a new
custom created by Moses, but a reminder of what God had already done.
4)
Jesus said that the Sabbath was
made for man (Mark 2:27). The first man was Adam; the Sabbath was made for
Adam. God does not need a Sabbath; he created specifically for his creation for
we humans do need rest. Are we to believe that Adam never had to take a day off
and had to work without rest for over 900 years?
5)
When Cain and Abel made their
sacrifice unto God, what day was it? Most translations say “in process of
time”, but the Hebrew literally says “at the end of the days” this likely
indicates that it was the end of the week or the Sabbath.
6)
It is a memorial of creation.
(Exodus 20:11; 31:17) Every time we rest upon the seventh day, as God did at
creation, we commemorate that grand event. It is a time when we go back in
spirit to the beginning of creation.
7)
The Bible always calls it,
"the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." (Exodus 20:9) It is the Sabbath of
the Lord, not the Sabbath of the Jews, it never was called that. People should
not stigmatize God's holy rest day by saying it was a “Jewish Sabbath.” Because
the Sabbath existed before the Jewish people existed.

Evident reference is made to a
weekly calendar consisting of seventh days all through the patriarchal age.
(Genesis 7:4, 8:10, 8:12, 50:10) In these verses we see clearly that the week
was already established in society. If the week was already established then we
can conclude that it included the Sabbath day.
9)
The patriarchs knew about the
Sabbath, for they kept a 7th day week calendar (29:27) we are not
told in Genesis how or whether they kept it. Solomon Goldman said:
"Both Philo and the Rabbis assumed that the first man emulated his Maker
and rested on the Sabbath." Some have speculated based on Genesis 26:5 that
Abraham also kept the Sabbath.
10) After Noah had gathered all the animals, he went into
the ark and on the Sabbath, the flood begun. (Genesis 7:11). The Sabbath was
his day of salvation, just like the Sabbath was the day of salvation for the
Jews.
11) The wording of the first time that the Sabbath appears
in Exodus it clearly indicates it was already known. “'Tomorrow is to be a day of
rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD”. There
was no detailed explanation about its meaning only on how it was to be kept.
(Exodus 16:23)
12) The Sabbath was kept before the Law in Sinai was
given. (Exodus 16:23) How could they keep the Sabbath if it was not already
known before the Ten Commandments were given? Most religious critics of the
Sabbath forget to mention that the Sabbath was kept by the Jews before the Ten
Commandments were given.
13) The Sabbath was given before the Ten Commandments were
given. (Exodus 16:28-29) it was a clear and separate commandment before the Ten
Commandments or the Law was given to Moses at Mount Sinai, so its existence was
established before the Law of Moses came into being.
14) God called it "my Commandments and my Laws",
God did not say “your Commandments and your Laws”. They were his Commandments
and his Laws, not the Jewish commandments and Laws. Which clearly mean it is
part of God's eternal rules. (Exodus 16:28)
15) The Sabbath was then added or included in God's moral
law "the Ten Commandments". These Ten Commandments are the heart of
the law. (Exodus 20:8-11.)
16) The first four of the Ten Commandments deal with our
relationship with God. The Sabbath is part of the Worship of God. (Exodus
20:2-17)
a) The first four commandments are part of loving God.
b)
The next sixth commandments are
part of loving our neighbors
Some said that they love God and their neighbors, but love is demonstrated thru actions, not thru some empty words.
17) The wording itself is quite clear that it was not a
new commandment but a reminder of what God had already given before. (Exodus
20:8) “Remember to keep the Sabbath Holy”
No other commandment is given as a reminder this quite clearly indicates prior
knowledge of this commandment. None of the other commandments start with
“Remember thou shall not kill” or “Remember thou shall not steal.”
18) The Sabbath was so holy that it was to be kept under
penalty of death. (Exodus 31:14-15) one man was stoned to death simply for
picking up sticks. This man wantonly disregarded the commandment of God. There
was no pressing need for him to pick up sticks.
19) God forbade work upon the Sabbath, even in the harvest
time, which was crucial for survival. (Exodus 34: 21) This clearly shows that
keeping the Sabbath trumped economic necessity. Yet the people never starved to
death by keeping the Sabbath.
20) God destroyed the Israelites in the wilderness because
they profaned the Sabbath. (Ezekiel 20: 12-13) Yes God destroyed his own
people for not keeping the Sabbath. If God destroyed those to whom he called
his people, what are we the gentiles to expect?
21) The Sabbath is the sign that he is our God. (Ezekiel
20:20) The Sabbath separates those who keep it from those who don’t. Those who
don’t keep the Sabbath usually claim to keep another day, but God has never
ordered another day to be kept.
22) The Passover is considered by many to be a high
Sabbath. (John 19:31) It was a special Sabbath even if it did not fall on the
actual Sabbath. This clearly indicates that the Sabbath was already known by
the Jews before Mt Sinai. Why call something a Sabbath that isn’t a Sabbath,
because this special day was to be considered as a Sabbath.
23) God promised that the line of David's kingship and
Jerusalem would stand forever if the people would keep the Sabbath. (Jeremiah
17: 24-25) Obviously they failed to keep it and Jerusalem was destroyed.
Failure to keep the Sabbath brings consequences.
24) He sent the Jews into the Babylonish captivity for
breaking the Sabbath. (Nehemiah 13:18) God was going to enforce this sacred
commandment even by force if necessary. When they returned from Babylon the
Jews were thereafter careful to keep the Sabbath.
25) He destroyed Jerusalem for desecrating the Sabbath.
(Jeremiah 17: 27) God specifically singled out the desecration of this
commandment as a cause for such destruction. Desecration of the Sabbath brings
destruction.
26) The prophecy by Isaiah, which refers to the future Christian
dispensation, strongly endorses keeping the Sabbath. (Isaiah 56). This would
have been the perfect place to predict a future demise of the Sabbath, if the
gentiles were not to keep it. So either Isaiah got it wrong or the Catholic
teachers got it wrong.
27) The Lord requires us to call it "honorable."
(Isaiah 58:12-13) Beware, ye who take delight in calling the Sabbath the
"old Jewish Sabbath," "a yoke of bondage," etc. If God
called it “honorable” then we should do the same.
28) The eunuchs that keep the Sabbath were promised a name
better than sons. (Isaiah 56:5) Now that is a very good reward for keeping the
Sabbath. Having children is a blessing, but a greater blessing will be given to
them for keeping the Sabbath.
29) The gentile proselytes that kept the Sabbath were
promised a place in God's holy mountain. (Isaiah 56:6-7) These are converts who
keep the Sabbath, how strange that this is the only specific commandment of the
ten singled out by God.
30) After the new heaven and new earth are created the
Sabbath will still be kept eternally (Isaiah 66:22-23) No hint of any future
end to the Sabbath here either. According to modern anti-Sabbath preachers
Isaiah is wrong for the Sabbath is not longer to be ever kept. I don’t know
about you but I prefer to believe Isaiah.
31) All the blessed holy prophets of the Old Testament
kept the Sabbath day. (Most likely also the prophets before Moses too) They are
our examples to follow. (Isaiah 56:2)
32) God placed the Sabbath in the heart of His moral law,
"the Ten Commandments". (Exodus 20:8-11) Why did He place it there if
it was not like the other nine precepts, which all admit to be immutable and
forever?
33) If the Sabbath was to be done away with why did God
not put it in another of the many laws of Moses? There are many other places
where God could have inserted this “temporary” commandment; after all we no
longer keep any of those ceremonial laws. (Deuteronomy 25)
34) God furthermore gave many instructions detailing how
the Sabbath was to be kept. (Exodus 20:8-11) None of the other commandments received
such special treatment; some were simply list in a terse manner. “Thou shall
not steal” no explanation of what stealing is or how it is to be kept at all.
Pretty plain and simple.
35) Of all the Ten Commandments, the Sabbath is the most
taught, preached and prophesied in the whole Bible. You go up and down all the
scriptures and the Sabbath stands out far above any of the other Ten
Commandments. (Way too many scriptures to list them)
36) For all the exaltation, teachings and threats dealing
with the Sabbath in the Old Testament are we Christians now going to simply
toss it aside like it means nothing. How come we don’t do the same with the
other Ten Commandments? Where are the anti-honoring parents preachers, where
are the anti-thou shall not steal teachers?
37) How about doing away with the tithe since it also was
Old Testament teaching? (Malachi 3:10 ) What
hypocrisy of some churches to keep the tithe as a doctrine which is not even a
part of the Ten Commandments but yet reject the Sabbath which is. There are
more biblical reasons to keep the Sabbath than to keep the tithe. Perhaps it is
not convenient $$ to get rid of the tithe. Shame on those churches which teach
the tithe and yet reject the Sabbath, how conveniently they pick and choose
which parts of the law they will continue teaching.
NEW TESTAMENT
JESUS
38) When the Son of God came, He kept the Sabbath day all
his life. (Luke 4:16) Thus he followed his Father's example at creation. Shall
we not be safe in following the example of the Son?
39) When Jesus began his work, He expressly declared that
He had not come to destroy the law. "Think not that I am come to destroy
the law, or the prophets." (Matthew 5:17.) So it is obvious he did not destroyed
the Sabbath. He fulfilled it and he kept it as it should be kept.
40) Jesus says it was made for man (Mark 2: 27); that is,
for the whole human race, as the word man is here unlimited. This does away
with the notion that the Sabbath was made exclusively for the Jewish people.
41) Jesus was Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28); that is, to
rule, love and protect it, much as a husband is the lord of the wife, to love
and cherish her.
42) He vindicated the Sabbath as a merciful institution
designed for man's good. (Mark 2:23-28) How can something that was created for
our own good, be now bad?
43) Instead of abolishing the Sabbath, he carefully taught
how it should be observed. (Matthew 12:1-13) It is nonsense to teach that he
broke the Sabbath, Jesus never broke the Sabbath.
44) The Pharisees accused Jesus of allowing his disciples
to break the Sabbath. (Mark 2:24) Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath would not allow
his Sabbath to be desecrated by anyone, if anyone knew the proper way to keep
the Sabbath it would have been him the creator of the Sabbath.
45) He taught His disciples that they should do nothing
upon the Sabbath day but what was "lawful." (Matthew 12:12) and doing
good is always lawful.
46) He instructed his apostles that the Sabbath should be
prayerfully regarded 40 years after His resurrection. (Matthew 24:20) This is
obviously in the future so why is there even mention of the Sabbath if it was
going to be done away by the church. Jesus knew the future; every prophecy
preacher agrees that he was speaking here about the future. So was he wrong?
How come all those anti-Sabbath prophecy teachers simply ignore the mention of
the Sabbath in this future prophecy. I have read some of their writings and all
of them conveniently skip over the mention of the Sabbath by Jesus.
47) The pious women who had been with Jesus carefully kept
the Sabbath day after His death. (Luke 23; 56) If Jesus death did away with the
Sabbath these women of God knew nothing about it.
48) Jesus never spoke against the Sabbath, broke it, or
even predicted it would be done away with anywhere in the scriptures. Not one
single scripture about such a gigantic change in the worship of God. It strains
the credibility that Jesus was planning to do away with the Sabbath which was
so important to the Jewish people, yet he never told anyone about it.
49) If Jesus was planning to do away with Ten Commandments,
then why did he expand them. In his sermon in the Mount, he expanded them by
elevating them even higher, he elevated killing to include anger against a
brother.
50) Jesus severely condemned the Pharisees as hypocrites
for pretending to love God, while at the same time they made void the Ten
Commandments by their tradition. (Mark 7:13) The keeping of Sunday is only a
tradition of men that breaks a true commandment of God.
51) Some argue that Jesus did not quoted the Sabbath
commandment to the young rich ruler, therefore we do not have to keep it. Well
since Jesus only quoted six of the commandments to the young rich ruler, then
does it mean that we should do away with the other four? Based only on what
Jesus told the young rich ruler now we can also disregard the following
commandments; You shall not covet, You shall not make idols, You shall not take
the name of the LORD your God in vain, right?
52) No Jesus told the young rich ruler “keep the
commandments” (Matthew 19:17), that he only listed a few does not mean that he
was voiding the rest. The commandments were a complete set, breaking one meant
breaking them all. When he told the young man to “keep the commandments” he
meant all of them, including the Sabbath.
53) Others argue that Jesus death did away with the law. Jesus
death did away with the ceremonial laws of Moses, but it never did away with
the Ten Commandments, which were distinct from the Ceremonial Mosaic Law.
54) And even if Jesus death it did away with the Ten
Commandments (not that it did), the Sabbath was given before the Ten
Commandments were given. The Sabbath was kept before there were any Ten
Commandments. (Deuteronomy 5:12)
55) If Jesus did away with the Sabbath at the cross then
how come the disciples kept the Sabbath which occurred the next day? The women
waited till the first day of the week to go and anoint Jesus. (Mark 16:1)
56) Jesus our Lord and example kept the Sabbath, why
should we do differently? Are we somehow more holy or enlighten than Jesus was?
(John 15:10)
PAUL
57) Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, called it "the
Sabbath day" in AD 45. (Acts 13:27) Did not Paul know? Or shall we believe
modern teachers, who affirm that it ceased to be the Sabbath at the
resurrection of Christ? Sometime around 33 AD.
58) Luke, the companion of Paul and inspired Christian
historian, writing as late as AD 62, calls it "the Sabbath day."
(Acts 13:44)
59) Paul read the Scriptures in public meetings on the
Sabbath day. (Acts 17:2-3) Wasn’t Paul the biggest opponent of the ceremonial law,
yet here he is keeping the Sabbath.
60) It was his custom to preach on the Sabbath day. (Acts
17:2) Why did not Paul started preaching on Sunday?
61) The book of acts alone gives a record of his holding
eighty-four meetings upon that day.
See Acts 13:14, 44; 16: 13; 17: 2; 18: 4, 11. Yet how many times did Paul
preached on a Sunday?
62) Paul the apostle of liberty and the one who fought the
imposition of the law upon the gentiles never preached against the Sabbath, yet
he preached on the Sabbath.
63) In all their accusations against Paul, his enemies never
charged him with disregarding the Sabbath day. Why did they not if he did not
keep it?
64) Paul himself expressly declared that he had kept the
law. "Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor
yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all." (Acts 25:8) How
could this be true if he had not kept the Sabbath?
65) Some contend that Paul only kept the Sabbath because
the Jews kept the Sabbath, but he also preached on the Sabbath when there were
only gentiles. (Acts 13:44)
66) Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles kept the Sabbath, why
should we do differently? Are somehow more enlighten than Paul?
BIBLE CHRISTIANS
67) Thirty years after Christ's resurrection, it still was
called "the Sabbath day." (Acts 13:14) There was never a hint of a
change.
68) The Gentile converts called it the Sabbath. (Acts
13:42) they never called it the Jewish Sabbath or the Old covenant Sabbath.
69) In the great Christian council, A. D. 52, in the
presence of the apostles and thousands of disciples, James calls it the
"Sabbath day." (Acts 15:21) No one objected or said anything about
it. Not only that, but the decision of James is actually an affirmation of the
Sabbath.
70) It was customary to hold prayer meetings on the
Sabbath day. (Acts 16:13) No hint here of any change in the day of prayer.
71) In the New Testament we have a record of many
religions meetings held on the Sabbath and only one meeting held on Sunday, and
even this was a farewell meeting, not a regular church gathering. (Acts
20:5-12) I repeat this was not a regular worship gathering by the disciples but
instead it was a farewell meeting.
72) No Christian of the New Testament, either before or
after the resurrection, ever did regular ordinary work upon the Sabbath day.
73) If all the Christians in the Bible kept the Sabbath,
why should modern Christians do differently? Are we somehow better than them? I
was under the impression that the brave early disciples who risked and even
gave their life for Jesus were our example.
THE NEW TESTAMENT
74) The Sabbath is mentioned in the New Testament 59
times, and always with respect, bearing the same title it had in the Old
Testament, "the Sabbath day."
75) Not a word is said anywhere in the New Testament about
the Sabbath's being abolished, done away, changed, or anything of the kind;
zip, nada, zero.
76) If God wanted to abolish the Sabbath he would have
been very explicit about it, but Sabbath breakers resort to ambiguous
scriptures to fabricate their case. There is not a single scripture anywhere
where it clearly says that the Sabbath has been abolished, not one.
77) The seventh-day, the Sabbath was always the Lord's
day. There is no proof anywhere that the Title "The Lord's day" was
given to the first day of the week or transferred to another day.
78) If there is no record anywhere in the New Testament of
anyone breaking the Sabbath or teaching against it. Then why should modern
Christians do so?
79) Some say that the New Testament never taught about
keeping the Sabbath. Why should it since the Old Testament had already engraved
that teaching into the Jews believers? For hundredths of centuries all the Jews
kept the Sabbath from their infancy. It is pointless to teach the basics of
kindergarten in a book directed to college students.
EARLY & LATER CHRISTIANS
80) If it is widely known and accepted that early
Apostolic Christians worshipped on the Sabbath, then why should we do
differently?
81) The Sabbath was kept by believers everywhere there was
not need to state the obvious practice of the church. The church met on the
Sabbath and that was that, no one questioned it. not one single objection to
its practice.
82) There were many debates in the early church but there never
was any debate about keeping the Sabbath day in the early church. Since
everyone kept the Sabbath. It was not even a matter of debate. Nobody brought
it up because no one would even question it.
83) After 70 AD, there was no more fear of the Jewish
authorities; Jerusalem had been destroyed and the power of the Jews had been
broken, they and their rites not longer threaten the church, so why was the
Sabbath still kept by most Christians even after that for centuries?
84) If as some affirm the post-apostolic Christians had
already abandoned the Sabbath, why did Constantine in the 4th
century had to issue an order prohibiting the keeping of the Sabbath? Why
prohibit something that no one is keeping anymore?
85) There are plenty of ancient writings that verify that
the majority of the early Christians worshipped on the Sabbath, well into the
fourth century.
86) Early and later Christians have kept the Sabbath. The
Sabbath has never gone away, down through history and in different places there
have always been groups of Bible believers who kept the Sabbath. No
persecution, nor attack has been able to destroy the Sabbath.
LOGICAL REASONS
87) Those who teach the Sabbath has been done away with;
then need to work 7 days a week without a single day of rest. No you cannot
switch the Sabbath to another day, there is no scripture authorizing you to do
so. Either keep the Sabbath on its proper day or don’t keep it at all in any
other day. Then you need to be true to your belief and work every single day of
the week till you drop dead from exhaustion. Come on be consistent!
88) If most Christians still follow the Ten Commandments,
why should the Sabbath be excluded? No you cannot follow only those
Commandments that you like, you must follow all of them or none of them. The
law is a package deal all of it or none of it.
89) If the Sabbath is done away with how come every
listing of the commandments still includes the Sabbath? Someone needs to
scratch the Sabbath or line it out from those lists. No more mention of the
Sabbath if it is done away with.
90) If the Sabbath is not longer valid how come we never
hear the Ten Commandments being called the nine commandments?
91) If the Sabbath is not longer valid then why even waste ink or breath by listing them among the Ten Commandments, those who hate the Sabbath need to quit mentioning it. From now on you have to list only 9 commandments.
92) When God observed, blessed and sanctified the Sabbath
after the creation. He stamped that day as God's rest day, or Sabbath day, as
Sabbath day means rest day. To illustrate; when a person is born on a certain
day, that day thus becomes his birthday. So when God rested upon the seventh day,
that day became His rest or Sabbath day. Who erased what God himself stamped?
93) Therefore the seventh day must always be God's Sabbath
day. Can you change your birthday from the day on which you were born, to one
on which you were not born? No. It would be a lie. Neither can you change God's
rest day to a day on which He did not rest. Hence the seventh day is still
God's Sabbath day.
94) The Sabbath was made before the fall; hence it is not
a type; for types and "shadows of things to come" were not introduced
till after the fall.
95) The Sabbath is not a Jewish institution; for it was
made 2,300 years before ever there was a single Jew.
96) Profaning and not keeping the Sabbath brought eventual
punishment from God.
97) There is no record anywhere that God has ever removed
his blessing or sanctification from the Sabbath day.
98) Some teach that it is a minor doctrine, whether it is
a minor or major doctrine is irrelevant, the point is that it is a doctrine
from God and must be kept.
99) Some say that it is a divisive doctrine and should not
be preached in the name of Christian tolerance. Well there are plenty of
doctrines in the Bible that are divisive, should we throw out every doctrine
that creates division? Baptism creates division, should we get rid of baptism
then?
100)
Some say the Sabbath is law and we
are not longer under law. That is clearly not true for the Sabbath observance
preceded the giving of the law. If keeping the Sabbath preceded the appearance
of the law how can it be law?
101)
To those who teach it is not an
important doctrine. Maybe they need to be reminded that they are not the judges
of what is or is not an important doctrine, that is for God to decide, we just
need to obey and keep his commandments. When the change to Sunday worship
begun, many of the early Christians resisted and died rather than forsake the
Sabbath, so obviously to them it was an important doctrine.
102)
Some say that if a person is
sincere, then Sunday worship is just as acceptable as Sabbath worship. That
idea is nowhere in the Bible. Otherwise God would accept the worship of pagans
since many of them do it with great sincerity.
103)
If Christian love is all that
matters and God knows our hearts then why even bother going to church on any
day? Then it should not matter what anyone teaches or believes?
104)
Some teach that since the majority
of Christians keep the Sunday, then it must be the correct day. Well since the
majority of Christians are also Catholic then we should all become Catholics?
If the majority is the standard then we should all become confucionists, since
the majority of the world (Chinese) believes in Confucianism.
105)
Some teach that since some
heretical groups keep the Sabbath, then it must be wrong to keep it. Well since
some of those heretical groups also read the Bible, then it must be wrong to
read the Bible. Since those heretical groups also pray, then we must quit
praying too.
106)
Since we are at the end of the
times when the restoration of all things should be, could it be not logical
that the widespread revival of Sabbath keeping be a part of this restoration?
107)
Those who fight against the
Sabbath and its keepers should be beware lest they be fighting against God.
(Acts 5:39)
108)
God has never given permission to
any man to work upon it. By what authority does anyone use the Sabbath day for
common labor?
109)
The calendar that people see every
day testify constantly that Saturday is the Seventh day, which is the Sabbath
day.
SUNDAY?
110)
Christians are never called or
asked in any scripture to commemorate the day of his resurrection, only the Sabbath
is commanded.
111)
Some teach that we should
commemorate the day the Lord rose from the death; however no scripture or
epistle calls for such commemoration at all.
112)
The Lord's Supper, which Christian
are actually called to keep, commemorates Jesus death which occurred on the
prior day to the Sabbath. (1 Cor 11:23-26). Then how come we do not hold
services every Friday?
113)
There is never any blessing,
commandment, prophecy, or anything in the Bible indicating that Sunday should
be kept holy, but plenty declaring the Sabbath holy.
114)
There is not a single scripture
anywhere indicating that Sunday would replace the Sabbath. Having a onetime farewell
meeting on a Sunday does not automatically transfers the Sabbath. One time
deviation because of necessity does not invalidate centuries of examples.

The word Sunday never occurs in
the Bible at all, it comes from paganism (Sun Day) It was the day the pagans
worshiped the Sun deity. There is plenty of evidence that proves that the
pagans worshipped the Sun and that Sunday was the day they did it. Should we Christians
borrow their holiday?
CATHOLIC TEACHING
116)
It is well documented that the
Christian world, with the exception of the Roman and Alexandrian churches, kept
the seventh-day Sabbath well into the fourth century.
117)
Evidence indicates that the
tradition to worship on Sunday began in Rome and Alexandria. A very prominent
historian, writing about the year 385 AD, says, "Although almost all
churches throughout the world celebrate the sacred mysteries on the Sabbath of
every week, yet the Christians of Alexandria and at Rome, on account of some
